An Allegory in Three Parts
Sometimes we have an experience before us that is full of unknowns. My parents immigrated from Taiwan to America when I was a toddler. They left a familiar world for one with confusing customs and hopefully better opportunity. I had my own experience with leaving when my marriage failed. I coped by using yet another way of leaving. I left the city and started backpacking in the woods.
As I spent more time in the wilderness, I began to view these experiences as pilgrimages, a kind of search for the promised land. I started making photographs to explore what happens when we leave what we know. The images are grouped into three parts, each a stage of the journey from leaving to acceptance.
